Every Scrabble player strives to have a good balance of vowels and consonants on his rack. But sometimes there’s nothing you can do to prevent yourself from getting a rack with content that is completely unusable. But wait! If your rack is full of consonants – maybe you should learn that there really are some valid words with only consonants in Scrabble. They are called consonant dumps. I will show them to you in this article. (I have also listed the word lists in which the words appear: TWL 14 or CSW 15)
Words with only Consonants in Scrabble That You Should Know
Almost every English word we know has vowels. This makes a word without vowels seem wrong – like the words below. But these words with only consonants are valid in Scrabble!
CRWTH / CRWTHS
- This is a Welsh name for a Celtic instrument similar to a violin.
- Valid in: TWL 14 and CSW 15
CWM / CWMS
- A Welsh word for valley, especially one created by glacial movement.
- Valid in: TWL 14 and CSW 15
CWTCH
- A Welsh word for “to hide”, “to cuddle up”.
- Valid in: CSW 15
GRRL / GRRLS / GRRRL / GRRRLS
- A slang word for a fierce and feisty woman.
- GRRL / GRRLS valid in: TWL 14
- GRRL / GRRLS / GRRRL / GRRRLS valid in: CSW 15
NTH
- This word is used to express an undefined, but very large number – for example: “I am doing this for the nth time”
- Valid in: TWL 14 and CSW 15
PWN / PWNS
- This is a computer gamer slang word. PWN means to dominate your opponent. Actually it should be OWN – but the player would hit the P instead of the O quite often – so jokingly, the words PWN developed.
- Valid in: CSW 15
TWP
- This is a dialect word from South Wales meaning stupid or daft.
- Valid in: CSW 15
Interjections with only Consonants Valid in Scrabble
There are a lot of interjections among the words with only consonants in Scrabble! The experienced Scrabble player might already know some of them – but I would bet that you will also learn some new interjections here:
BRR / BRRR
- BRR is what you say when you feel cold.

- GRR is what you say when you are angry

HM / HMM / HMMM
- An interjection that is said when someone broods over something.

MM / MMM
- An exclamation of satisfaction.

PFFT
- PFFT is a kind of sound – the word expresses a sudden ending or sudden disappearance of something.
- Valid in: TWL 14 and CSW 15
PHT / PHPHT
- An interjection that is used to express mild annoyance or disagreement
- Valid in: TWL 14 and CSW 15
PST / PSST
- This interjection is used to attract someone’s attention quietly.
- Valid in: TWL 14 and CSW 15
SH / SHH / SHHH
- With the interjection SH you can tell someone to be silent.

- An exclamation of impatience.

Scrabble Words with only Consonants – and with Y
Some of you may be wondering why none of the words above contain the letter Y. Actually, Y is a special case – it can be used as a vowel or a consonant! Here are some examples:
- Y as a consonant: SHY, THYME
- Y as a vowel: YES, YELLOW
