34 Amazing Games

34 Amazing Word Games you’ve missed!

created on by  in Android, iOS, Mobile word games

If you’re into word games, odds are high that you’ve got the all-time classics like Scrabble or Words with Friends on your smartphone. Therefore, you’ve surely visited word-grabber.com in order to get some help from our Scrabble Word Finder or Words with Friends Cheat.

But what about the second row, the substitute’s bench, the crazy amount of word games that don’t get the massive exposure of the big ones? Don’t worry: We won’t mess with your phone by recommending a bunch of buggy indie games, that aren’t compatible with your newest device or are compiled so badly, that they turn your smartphone into a juddery steam locomotive. Quite the contrary: In this article, you’ll find 34 amazing word games, that are very popular among the crowd, definitely work on your (Android) device, but are still not among the top 5 word games that everyone knows. Let’s go!

1. English Crossword Puzzle

Yeah, you might have already guessed it by reading the word “juddery” above; I feel a little British today. And if you’d like to improve your British English, you should absolutely check out this fine collection of free crosswords that’ll all work without an internet connection. Just like in the good ol’ times without all that Taradiddle and Widdershins.

As of today, “English Crossword Puzzle” has been reviewed 7,434 times with a 4.6 rating.

2. Classic Words Solo

This game is another great choice if you want to enrich your vocabulary (actually in seven different languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Dutch and Polish) without being dependent on your internet connection or the goodwill of your opponents.

Classic Words Solo means instant fun for everyone, who is happy to play against the computer instead of other human players.

As of today, this game has been downloaded more than 5 million times and reviewed by 149,236 different people. It is also available for iOS.

3. Word Wow Big City

Do you feel like many word games are a bit lifeless and loveless? Well, in that case, “Word Wow Big City” might be something for your taste. This game has been sweetened by a cute worm, that you’ve got to help through its journey. From now on, you won’t make words just for the purpose of making words, no, you will clear a path for the worm, so that it can move forward. Isn’t that an adorable idea?

At least 10,233 reviewers giving out 4.4 points (even 4.7 on iOS) think so!

4. WordBrain 2

Yeah, you might now WordBrain (maybe because you’re read our review), but did you know that the famous game by MAG Interactive has got a successor? Word Brain 2 is also free to play, offers more than 100 unique themes and another 1130 challenging levels.

It’s safe to say, that the playable sequel is as popular as the first one, judging by the great rating of 4.6 out of nearly 80.000 reviews. Also available for iOS.

5. Word Find

It’s not easy to find “Word Find”, as the name is extremely generic and very common among the bunch of App developers publishing word games. However, if you search for the full name “Word Find – Word Connect Free Offline Word Games” or click on the link above, you’ll directly get to the huge game with more than 2.000 levels promising weeks, if not months, of fun.

An additional, nice feature: The game is available in eight languages including rather uncommon ones like Danish. And the people seem to love it: “Word Find” has got a score of 4.7 on Google Play.

6. Word Search Puzzle

If there were a price for versatility, “Word Search Puzzle” would be among the nominees. With 50 (!) word categories, this game has got it all covered. Plus, its smooth and colorful appearance makes it almost look a playable Instagram logo. Very pleasing to the eyes!

It “just” got a rating of 4.4 on Google Play, but it has been reviewed more than 45.000 times!

7. Smart Words

Published under the full name “Smart Words – Word Search, Word game”, this title by WL Pixign Games offers a huge number of thematic levels and a variety of tasks. The developers decided on specializing in creating memory, puzzle and brain games and success proves them right!

With a score of 4.8, “Smart Words” is one of the top-rated word games above the mark of 100.000 downloads.

8. Codeword Puzzles

For all of you, who don’t know what to expect from a game called “Codeword Puzzles”, LR Studios also branded it as “Codeword Puzzles (Crosswords)” and “Codebreaker”. But no matter under which name you’ll find this game, the gameplay stays the same: Codeword Puzzles is similar to crosswords, but instead of clues, each letter has been replaced by a number and you need to figure out which letter each number represents.

In case you want to get rid of the ads, there is also a pro version available.

9. Words in Word

In this game, you create words from the letters of another word given to you at each level. For example, if one of the levels features the word “CLOTHES”, you have to enter all possible combinations like “CLOSET”, “HOSTEL” or “CHEST”. If that’s not an amazing opportunity to use our letter sorting tool, I don’t know what is.

This game has been installed over one million times.

10. Microsoft Wordament®

You don’t see a connection between Microsoft and (word) games? Well, you’re not alone. Mostly, people will only see Microsoft as the distributor of Windows, the world’s #1 operating system, but you shouldn’t forget, that Microsoft has also developed Age of Empires II, bought Minecraft from Mojang and is the company behind the Xbox video game console. So, they should also be able to create a great word game right?

They are! And if you sign in with your Microsoft account, you can also earn Xbox Live achievements and save your progress in the cloud. Also available for iOS.

11. CrossCraze

Like “English Crossword Puzzle” and “Classic Words Solo”, CrossCraze is also a word game designed for players who prefer the solo challenge against an offline computer opponent. It’s available for free, but you can also buy a pro version for around five bucks in order to get the full ad-free experience.

The free version has been downloaded over 100.000 times and the players gave it a rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars.

12. Ruzzle

With over 70 million players, Ruzzle (Free) is among the top 10 of word games in 145 (!) countries. The game has been developed by MAG Interactive and if you’ve carefully read this list, you remember that they are also responsible for WordBrain and WordBrain 2.

In “Ruzzle”, you have to swipe over the scrambled letters to create words being more valuable than the words formed by your opponent. Also available for iOS.

13. Daily Themed Crossword

In this game, you’ll get a brand new crossword game each and every day. Plus, you can choose from an amazing range of topics like sports, movies or history. In case, you’re a bit overwhelmed by the variety or the difficulty level of this game, you don’t need to worry. You just need our crossword solver. 😉

“Daily Themed Crossword – A Fun crossword game” by “PlaySimple Games” has been installed on more than one million Android (and iOS) devices. Get your mobile out and catch up!

14. Fill-Ins

“Fill-Ins · Word Fit Puzzles” is one of the best releases of the development studio “Razzle Puzzles”. The game adds a nice little twist to regular crossword puzzles as it features words instead of clues. A further gimmick: You can track your solve times with a built-in stats tracker, that even displays historical data of your matches.

The game has a 4.6-star rating on Google Play out of 8.450 reviews so far.

15. Words Crush

Sometimes, it’s safe to choose a game from a development studio, that has already released a bunch of very good games. Given that, Words Crush is a safe choice, since the company behind this game is BitMango, who have also published Word Cookies, a very popular word game within the community.

Due to the great coverage of BitMango’s PR machine, “Words Crush: Hidden Words!” is also one of the biggest word games ever, with over 5 million downloads and 280.000 user reviews – and a 4.9-star rating in the Apple Store.

Cover art

16. Word Cross

“Word Cross” by “WePlay Word Games” is another safe choice for the lover of word games. Why? Because it’s among the “Editors’ Choice”, meaning it has been recommended by Google itself.

Thanks to the concomitant exposure on Google Play, the game has been downloaded over 10 million times. So you’re in good company if you do the same. Even if you’ve got an iPhone.

17. 7 Little Words

To be honest, I had a good laugh, when I first read the title of this game. It’s not because of the subheading “A fun twist on crossword puzzles”, it’s because of its resemblance to a Nu Metal smash hit of my childhood, 7 Words by Deftones.

Well, unlike the song, this game doesn’t come along with a parental advisory sticker; it’s 100% G-rated and good for the young and the old, Android and iOS users.

18. Word Search: Unscramble Words

Don’t be put off by the hurtfully unimaginative title! This game is amazingly done, designed with an easy-to-understand, unobtrusive interface and a hell load of levels. Plus, it’s both playable online and offline, so you can even kill your time with this one, if you’re sitting in a bunker, hiking in the woods or traveling through rural Germany.

“Word Search: Unscramble words” by “OpenMyGame” has been reviewed by more than 200.000 people giving 4.6 out of 5 points.

19. Word Trip

I sincerely hope you’ve read our “Trend App” pages featuring full-length written reviews, tutorials, and your download options. One of the latest articles is about Word Games Tour, a game, that is some kind of a playable wor(l)d trip.

Who invented it? Definitely not the Swiss (does that joke also works in English? Let me know!), but the Indians! Cheers to PlaySimpleGames and their great title Word Trip. Also available for iOS.

Cover art

20. Flow Fit

No worries, this is not one of these super-motivating motion-controlled activity games, that everybody has to like, but no one actually does. Although “Flow Fit” sounds like a Wii Sport rip-off, it’s actually a word puzzle by “Big Duck Games LLC” and a great mixture of a crossword game and a jigsaw puzzle.

Unlike its predecessor, “Flow Free”, that has been downloaded over 300 million times (!), “Flow Fit” is a bit of a hidden gem, that still shines brighter than ever. Both on Android and iOS.

Cover art

21. Aworded Crack

Okay, chances are high you know this one, but who knows? Since “Aworded Crack” by “Etermax” is a golden oldie, maybe the young folk hasn’t heard of it yet. It was 7 years ago, when “Aworded Crack” was “App Store’s best game of 2012”, “App Store’s best new game of 2012” and, I don’t know, maybe it also won the Grammy and five Oscars.

The game is great despite of its many advertisements. If you’re resistant to the ad virus, you should check out this great classic! No matter if you’ve got an Android phone or not.

Cover art

22. Word Search – Mind Fitness App

Since “Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?”, people are crazy about this modern thing called “brain fitness” or “mind fitness”. And to be honest, the idea isn’t a bad one: By keeping your brain cells active, you can actually prevent bad diseases like Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

And if we can trust the 30.000 people giving “Word Search Mind Fitness App” one of the best ratings within this list, this game seems to be a great tool to keep our gray matter healthy.

Cover art

23. Word Search: Hidden Words

Remember BitMango (Words Crush, Word Cookies,…)? They’ve also released this jewel here, which still hasn’t received the love it deserves. I don’t know if that will ever happen, because, besides the main purpose of the game (finding hidden words), people seem to spend most of their time watching ads here. I can’t second that, honestly, as I don’t think the amount or length of ads is unreasonable here.

What do you think? Try it out for yourself!

Cover art

24. Word Pizza

It can’t be a bad game if there’s Pizza involved, right? And “Word Pizza – Word Games Puzzles” by “OpenMyGame” is indeed a good one, in which you can become “a chief of words”. Besides creating words from the letters placed in a circle (you know that game principle, don’t you?), there is also a small little story and a few mini-games wrapped around this core gameplay, making it really atmospheric and likable.

This game has been downloaded more than one million times and people love it – look at the 4.8-rating, both on Android and iOS.

Cover art

25. Word City

“Word City: Connect Word Game – Word Games” (Oh, how I love this buzzword-stuffed game titles… I guess, they’ve missed saying, it’s a word game!) by “BigStarGames” is like Word Trip (#19) with cities! It’s a combination of great crossword puzzles, word connect and word searches, designed with beautiful backgrounds, that consists of great city shots from all over the world.

The game has been reviewed almost 5000 times and deserved its great 4.7-star rating on Android and iOS.

Cover art

26. Word Across

Do you think that all of the word games above look the same? In that case, I would like to show you a true refresher for your tired eyes. “Word Across” by “Wordfun Games” is a great visual experience offering true variation in its level design: No matter if you’re creating doodles in your notepad or if you shoot hoops in the gym. Word Across is packed with word games across all sceneries.

The game has been reviewed by close to 5000 players and got a great 4.7-star rating. Although iPhone users think slightly differently about it.

27. Word Tiles: Relax n Refresh

It’s BitMango again! This time, it’s your goal to find all the words from stacks of letter tiles set in front of beautiful landscapes, accompanied by peaceful music. It’s a great game with a relaxing and calm atmosphere and therefore a great alternative to all of these fast-paced and colorful APM-games.

500.000+ people were in need of a game like this and most of them didn’t regret their choice. Neither on Android nor on iOS.

Cover art

28. Bonza Word Puzzle

Like Word Cross (#16), “Bonza Word Puzzle” by “MiniMega” is among Google Play’s official Editor’s Choice in the category of word games. Even Will Shortz from “The New York Times” states, that”Bonza puzzles are instantly addictive!”. But what’s so great about Bonza Word Puzzle? Well, it’s maybe the crossover nature of the game, being some kind of a mixture of a crossword game, jigsaw puzzle and trivia quiz.

One way or another, the game is getting much love, both from the press and the audience, from Android and iPhone users.

Cover art

29. Bonza Planet

If “Bonza Word Puzzle” were the Center Stage, “Bonza Planet” would be the Alternative Stage. So, basically, this game is where the cool kids hang out. The second game of MiniMega is neither as famous and popular as the first one nor is it among the “Editor’s Picks”. It’s like the second child of a family, that is as cute as the first one, but doesn’t get all the love or attention, just because it’s not the firstborn.

Quite unfair, huh? Well, you can change it! Go for justice! Even with your iPhone!

Cover art

30. Word Charm

The developers say, Word Charm “is one of the most addictive (…) word search games, with superb graphics and good interaction design.” Although they lay it on quite thick, they’re not wrong. “Word Charm” is charming indeed, it looks beautiful, it’s easy to handle and intuitive to play.

As of today, the game has been downloaded more than one million times and almost 13.000 people gave it 4.7 stars (although the ratings in the App Store don’t look so good).

Cover art

31. Word Farm Cross

Tired of the fast-paced city life? In “Word Farm Cross” by BitMango (yes, again…), you can retreat to the countryside with Jack the dog as your cute companion. This game is so adorable, that it has to appear in this list. The gameplay is very common, but due to its coherent design, you can almost breathe fresh country air while playing it.

Maybe this game is also something for you, in case the weather is bad, but you still need to see some green. 🙂 No Android phone? No excuse!

Cover art

32. Pictoword

“Pictoword: Fun Word Games, Offline Word Brain Game” by “Kooapps Games – Fun Word and Brain Puzzle Games” is not only the longest title in our whole list; it’s also one of the largest “2 pics, one word” games available on Google Play. In this subcategory of word games, you have to match pictures to words by guessing the two parts of it.

Pictoword is very popular, yet not known by everybody. But looking at the ten millions of downloads on Android and iOS, there must be something to it.

Cover art

33. Word Crack

If “Word Cookies” is about cookies, and “Word Trip” is about world trips, “Word Crack” is about…

Haha, got you. But seriously: The game from the makers of “Aworded Crack” (#21) is a great one, that is played both asynchronous and cross-platform. So you can also challenge your Facebook friends or random users of any platform. On top of that, you can play an unlimited amount of simultaneous games.

Thus, you won’t have problems finding an enemy, since more than 5.000.000 users have downloaded this app.

34. Psych!

Last but not least, we’d like to present to you “Psych! Outwit your Friends!” by Warner Bros. International Enterprises.

Although it’s part of the Word Category on Google Play, “Psych!” differentiates itself from all other games in this list. It’s neither about solving crosswords nor creating words out of a bunch of letters, it’s something completely different: In this game, each player makes up fake answers to real trivia questions. Now, it’s your turn to identify the real answer among your friends’ fakes.

This party game has been downloaded more than 1 million times and if you need an idea of what to do with your friends next time you meet them, you should try it out, too. Also available for iOS.
